How we teach writing at Wildmoor Heath
We used a phased approach to teaching writing at Wildmoor Heath. When teaching writing, we start with reading:
Phase 1 - reading as a reader
Phase 2 - reading as a writer
Phase 3 - shared, guided and independent writing
Phase 4 - edit, improve, evaluate (and present!)

Writing doesn't just happen in 'Literacy' lessons, but across the curriculum. Children are expected to apply their writing skills in every lesson - from explanations in science, to recounts in history and reports in geography. We use writing prompt cards to support children.
The teaching of spelling strategies (both phonics and non-phonics based) have always been a priority. In Keystage 1, the focus is usually around phonics, but in Keystage 2 this widens. The teaching of spelling is supported by:
Grammar and punctuation underpins the teaching of writing and is taught within each phase of writing as an intergrated part of the unit. With the new Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation test introduced in 2013, some teaching is now done in discrete lessons. Teachers use two resources to support their teaching:
We recently introduced writing target cards to support the teaching of writing. The cards are focussed on grammar, punctuation, spelling and handwriting and are based on the end of year objectives for each year group. They serve two purposes – the children know their individual targets and have a visual reminder of their success and secondly, they are a powerful reminder of what they can and should be doing in their writing; what we might call their ‘non-negotiables’.
Writing forms a major part of our display work, but we also value writing by creating class books and asking children to share their work at assemblies or with their peers.
